ST PETERSBURG – Keberhasilan Belgia mengalahkan Inggris dengan skor 2-0 di laga perebutan tempat ketiga menorehkan sejarah baru di Piala Dunia. Belgia bergabung dengan dua negara lain sebagai tim yang paling variatif mencetak gol.
Belgia menang atas Inggris melalui gol Thomas Meunier di menit ke-4 dan Eden Hazard di menit ke-82. Meunier menjadi pemain ke-10 di Timnas Belgia yang mencetak gol sepanjang gelaran Piala Dunia 2018.
Menurut laman resmi FIFA dan catatan Opta, hanya ada dua negara sebelum Belgia yang berhasil melahirkan 10 pencetak gol berbeda dalam satu edisi Piala Dunia. Kedua negara itu adalah Prancis di tahun 1982 dan Italia pada edisi Piala Dunia 2006.
“Kami memiliki 10 pencetak gol yang berbeda, yang terbaik dalam sejarah Piala Dunia. Tim ini telah memecahkan rekor dengan cara yang benar,” kata pelatih Timnas Belgia, Roberto Martinez, dikutip Sportsmole, Minggu (15/7/2018).
“Ini semua tenang pencapaian. Ini adalah finis terbaik Belgia di Piala Dunia. Para pemain layak mendapatkannya dan mereka ingin membuat negara itu bangga,” lanjutnya.
Sebelumnya diberitakan, Martinez juga memuji penampilan kolektif yang ditunjukkan para pemainnya di Piala Dunia 2018. Menurut Martinez, Belgia telah meninggalkan sepak bola oportunis yang mengandalkan bakat dari satu-dua pemain bintang.
